Chapter 4: Chapter 4
We reach the tiny, cramped room, and Peeta and Gale are still confused. I sit on the tilted chair, and the woman brings out a small machine with a rounded end. "This helps me see inside you." The woman explains. "Lift your shirt a bit, dear." She instructs, and I do as told, watching her the whole time. She puts a few squirts of blue gel on my stomach, and recognition flashes across Gale's face.
Dr. Mainster rubs the gel around with the machine, an image popping up on the screen. A sound pumps through the air, and Gale gasps. Peeta still doesn't understand. "You hear the large sound, and small sound?" She asks me, and I nod. I know what those noises are. I heard them with my mother and Prim when she was still inside my mother. "That's your heartbeat, and the baby's." Now Peeta yells with glee. "She's pregnant?!" He says loudly, and Dr. Mainster nods. "Can you tell the sex yet?" He asks excitedly. "No, not yet. She's only about a month pregnant." Peeta smiles as the doctor wipes the sticky, cold gel away. I pull my shirt down, and Peeta picks me up, and twirls me around. "Oh, Katniss." He says, hugging me. I feel I'm about to vomit on him if he doesn't stop twirling. "Peeta stop. She'll be sick." Gale says, noticing my predicament.
"Sorry." He says, putting me down. I stumble over my feet, and he stops me from falling. "Lets get back to the apartment." Peeta says, and I nod. "Gale, we'll see you later." I hug him, and he hugs back. "Congratulations, Catnip." He smiles, releasing me, and leaving. Peeta hugs me again. "We're gonna be a family." He exclaims. I look into his blue eyes, and smile. It's a fake smile. "Yep."
I wake up, terror racking my body and mind. I'm screaming, though I didn't realize it. I close my mouth, and Peeta jolts awake, looking for an intruder. "What's wrong?" He asks, his hair messy, and eyes tired. "N-nothing. Go back to sleep." I whisper, hugging myself. I was lying. I've been lying an awful lot lately. I had nightmares about The Games. Instead of Peeta and I in the arena, I picture the baby inside of me as a teenager, fighting, dying, cutting people into bits and eating them, cutting their heads off.
I shake my head to clear the thought, and lay back down. "I'm fine." I whisper to myself, and Peeta mindlessly wraps his arms around my waist, and scoots closer to me. I smile, and play with his blonde hair. I have no hope of going to sleep now. I imagine a small child running through the meadow outside our house in the Victor's Village, and picking Primrose's from the bush Peeta planted. I imagine it as a girl, handing Peeta and I the flowers, and toddling around, the roses behind her ears.
I smile at the image. I do want this baby. I picture her with black hair, like mine, and blue eyes just as Peeta's. A mix of her parents. I close my eyes, imagining her as a teenager as I was, but popular, and beautiful, sitting where Gale used to sit. At the crowded popular table. I think of Gale, of him and Beetee designing those bombs I am sure killed my sister. I imagine Prim, her smiling face, her duck tail, her blonde hair, and blue eyes that set her apart from mostly everyone else from the Seam.
I then imagine her before the bombs, turning to see me. The last thing she would ever see. Then her body being blasted away, caught on fire. All I can hope for her sake is that she was killed instantly, painless. Her shrieking face crosses my mind. Then her face on fire, being burned, melting slowly away, her eyes rolling out of her head, hung on those helpless pieces of muscle. Her lips sagging like in the arena when Peeta's face was distorted. Then Prim's face changes to Peeta's, burning and melting away, then to Gale's, Madge's,Finnick, Mags, Annie, Finnick and Annie's son, Rue, my mother, my dad, Greasy Sae, Darius, Haymitch, Effie, and finally, the unborn child growing in me.
My eyes fly open, and Peeta is shaking me. I'm screaming again. My screams relinquish when I realize it is Peeta. Not the melted mutt of Peeta. I sit up, and hug him. "Are you alright?" He asks, and I nod. "I am now." I whisper. "You were asleep for 3 minutes, and you started screaming. I tried to shake you awake. You yelled out a lot of names. 'Prim! Peeta! Gale! Finnick! Mags! Annie! Rue! Daddy! Haymitch! Baby!' I caught those, the others were just blurs. I tried to shake you awake for about 5 minutes until you just woke up." He says. Daddy. I yelled for my dad. My body falls from screaming into tears.
"Oh, Peeta. I want him back. I want my dad back so much. I miss him, and I need him here with me. To get me through this. All of it." I sob, and he rubs my back. "I know, Katniss. I know. Lets go for a walk. Neither of us will be able to go back to sleep." I nod, checking the cock hanging on the wall. "It's three in the morning. Lets go." I say, grabbing Peeta's hand, and setting off down the streets of District 2.
